"I thought I was watching and listening to Will Rogers with an Ivy League education and maybe that's true, but your humor and songs - both touching and delightful - was better and much more enjoyable than his lasso"
-Herb Freed, Film-maker, novelist and friend

My regular column and occasional CD and concert review

for the wonderful Folkworks.org Newsletter.

Columbia/Sony Records has released both albums:

Art and Paul

"Songs Of Earth And Sky"
"Hangin', Drinkin', and Stuff"

Albums were originally recorded in 1960-61 at the legendary Columbia 30th Street Studio in Manhattan. Each take was direct to 4 inchtape. No edits, punches, or overdubs. Sound like this has never been duplicated. Check it ourfor yourself. At the time we were regulars in Greenwich Village, sharing the stage with Peter Yarrow, Noel Stookey, Odetta, and a host of soon to be legends of the early folk revival of the sixties.

Both albums are available on all the streaming services: Amazon, Spotify, etc.
Be sure to type in both headings along with the album titles:
Art & Paul
and
Art and Paul

Art and Paul were then. This is what I'm doing now!

I've added a page with some of my recent songs. Pretty much raw and unadorned, recorded here at home. I'll keep adding to the collection as I write and record them. Writing is a passion and there are few pleasures that compare with finishing a new song. I hope you enjoy what you hear.... Just click the New Songs link to the right in order to listen...and oh yes, there are some New Videos too. Click the link to the right.

And.... a musical video of an actual crime

 'My Book'

Yet a work in progress.... what can I say?

Well, I'm being talked into finishing this series up. So...I've begun to assemble, write, edit a series of chapters chronicling the life and times of a folk-singer starting from my early days in Greenwich Village (1955 - can you believe it?) through my experiences coming to California, Art and Paul, The New Christy Minstrels and the little stuff that happened along the way that I had no idea were part of history. I'll keep y'all posted on progress. I need some encouragement, so if you want to drop me a line and encourage me, please do so. I also encourage folks to wait until it's published before you contact your lawyers. Nuff said... back to the study.... Art

For a few samples in no particular chronological order, go here and find your way. I promise that once it's done, it will be more organized.

"Sometimes I wake up
in the strangest places, and I wonder where I've been.
And in the time
between the time
between the time
between the time...
the gypsy sings again."
...from 'Golden Apples of The Sun' by Barry Kane and Art Podell

"My biggest fear is that
they will find out that I would write songs even
if they didn't pay me"
... Jack Murphy, songwriter

"You're asking me if I've experimented with marijuana? Cripes dad, next thing you'll be asking me to play folk-music!"
...my son David at age 16

This site was launched August 2010 as my personal 'log'. It contains music (some mine), photos, thoughts, reflections, history, events, links to friends' sites and things of interest to me. Maybe to you also.

I update frequently, tweak things here and there constantly. If you would like to contact me, please do so. I'm friendly enough for the most part.

My contact information is on the last page but if you are lazy...click

Thanks ... Art
